I have this skinny friend who eats whatever she wants. Juicy double cheeseburgers, donuts, chocolate cakes — but nothing seems to add to her slender shape.
Like many women, I can’t eat like how she does. When I do, I’ll pack on the pounds faster than a speeding bullet.
I pinned her down one day to ask how she does it. Why is it that she can eat whatever she wants and not pay the price. What’s her secret?
Well, I got it out of her. But you’ll be disappointed to hear that it’s not a magic pill. It’s actually simpler than many women realize.
Her lifestyle isn’t much different than mine or yours—she just makes different choices that while they may seem small, they add up to big results over time.
Here are the choices that she makes on a daily basis to keep herself slender.
1. She walks everywhere
My skinny friend walks everywhere.
If a place she needs to get to is within a 30 minute walk, she’ll walk and not take the car.
Yes, she has to start her journey earlier, but it gives her the daily dose of exercise without feeling it’s exercise.
And she gets to take in the fresh air that most of us don’t take the time to enjoy.
2. She packs her own snacks
Everyone snacks throughout the day — my skinny girlfriend included. The difference is that she keeps a pack of raw almonds in her purse. They’re filling and a big handful of them adds up to less than 100 calories.
The main idea is to keep healthy options for snacks easily available. When those mid-morning and afternoon cravings come calling you won’t be running for a hot chocolate or a candy bar.
3. She gets 8 hours of sleep during the weekdays
She tells me she sleeps more on the weekends if her husband and kids allow her to.
Many studies have shown that not getting enough sleep increases your food cravings (for junk food in particular) and your ability to resist them is significantly reduced.
This is a result of your body having trouble regulating the hormones that control hunger.
If you don’t get enough sleep, your ghrelin levels, the hunger hormones increase, making you feel hungry all the time— even if you’ve had big meals throughout the day.
4. She does not skip breakfast
It may be tempting to skip the first meal of the day, thinking you can “save” those calories for later.
Studies have shown that the common mistake leads to overeating at your next meal. Avoid the worry and leave yourself enough time in the morning for a nutritious breakfast.
Make sure you have a healthy portion of protein in your breakfast too.
5. She eats more complex carbohydrates
Unlike foods that are high in simple carbs, complex carbs are digested slowly, thereby keeping you full and satisfied longer. And you’ll find yourself digging into your snack pack less.
Simple carbs are basically just made of sugar. They’r refined sugar added to all packaged food and drinks (cookies, cereals, fruit juices, etc).
Complex carb options include whole grain oats or rice, nuts, beans, seeds, vegetables and fruits. Eat them whole and unprocessed to get the ultimate benefit.
6. She eats slowly
Everyone eats in a hurry these. But this quick eating often leads to you overeating.
It takes our brain up to 20 minutes to send the signals to our tummy that we’re full. So, slow things down by taking smaller bites and enjoying a conversation with your dinner partner.
7. She uses hot sauces as her condiment of choice
Instead of ketchup and mayonnaise, my skinny friend adds hot sauces and salsas to her food. They are mostly zero calories per serving (and if they have any at all, it’s still typically only about 5 calories).
Compare that to mayonnaise, which has a diet-killing 57 calories per tablespoon. And compared that to ketchup, which has 20 calories per tablespoon.
So, avoid them and add a little guilt-free, zero calorie spices to your food.
8. She regularly eats 5 “wonder” veggies
My skinny friend does not eat to live. She lives to eat, therefore she balances her appetite for burgers and fries with wholesome, nutrient dense vegetables.
